Russia launched a Tsiklon-3 rocket Friday carrying a Russo-Ukrainian satellite and a smaller Ukrainian orbiter, both designed for scientific research, press reports said.

Interfax news agency reported the rocket blasted off from the Plessetsk cosmodrome in the north of the country at 2:20 pm (11H20 GMT) and the satellites entered orbit 42 minutes later.

Both satellites were designed to survey the earth's surface and relay scientific information which could contribute to knowledge about the environment and warn of natural disasters.
