The US rocket plane SpaceShipOne landed back in California's Mojave desert at 8:34 am (1534 GMT) on Wednesday after what organizers said was a successful flight into space.

The stubby rocket ship returned to Earth some one-and-a-half hours after staging the first stage of its bid to grab a 10-million-dollar prize aimed at kickstarting commercial space travel.
