    The world's fourth largest flat panel maker, Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp said Thursday that it posted a more than 172 fold rise in first half profit on the back of robust demand.

    In the six months to June, the company, a maker of thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, reported net profit of 17.33 billion Taiwan dollars (509.7 million US), up from 100.73 million Taiwan dollars seen a year ago.

    Sales surged from 24.01 billion dollars to 55.02 billion dolalrs.

    Earnings per share in the first half rose sharply to 5.21 dollars, up from 0.03 dollar.
