EADS Astrium and Arabsat sign contract for two satellites

European satellite builder Astrium said Tuesday it had signed an agreement to build two communications satellites for the Saudi Arabian company Arabsat.

"Scheduled to enter service in 2006, the satellites will provide communications services over a wide area within the Middle East region," the company said in a statement.

No financial details were given.

Astrium is the satellite unit of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company.

French telecommunications equpment maker Alcatel said separately that its Alcatel Space unit has been selected to install equipment for both satellites.
