The fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract has a performance period that extends until November 15, 2028. The cumulative value across all selected contractors could reach up to $476 million.
Planet Labs has been a key partner in the CSDA program since its launch. This latest contract allows NASA researchers continued access to Planet's high-resolution PlanetScope imagery and its extensive archive. Planet's constellation of Dove satellites captures daily images of Earth's landmass, with an average of over 2,700 images taken for each point on Earth. NASA has used this data for diverse applications, including monitoring climate change, biodiversity, and disaster responses.
"Planet and NASA have a long history of collaboration, particularly since our founding team - myself included - got our starts there. NASA pioneered the use of commercial data to support pivotal research that has advanced climate science, glaciology, and more - and it is this spirit of leveraging space and human ingenuity to improve life on Earth that informs Planet's mission to this day," said Will Marshall, co-founder and CEO of Planet. "We're proud to continue building this legacy and making Planet data available to researchers across the country through our ongoing partnership together, and are excited to expand on this important work for another four years to come."
The CSDA program provides cost-effective access to enhanced Earth observation data, complementing NASA and its partners' capabilities by offering improved spatial resolution, higher temporal frequency, and new features. This data is essential for advancing scientific research and enabling better-informed decisions in understanding the planet's evolving conditions.
