Millennium Space Systems, a Boeing Company, has started the on-orbit commissioning phase for NASA's Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) following their successful launch on July 23.

The company designed, built, and tested the two identical TRACERS spacecraft at its El Segundo facility and is now managing mission operations from its internal Mission Operations Center.

"Millennium has enabled TRACERS through design, production, and now into launch and mission operations," said Tony Gingiss, CEO of Millennium Space Systems. "We are thrilled to be part of this important NASA mission, enabling critical advances in heliophysics science which will help improve our understanding of space weather, ultimately benefitting commercial and national space systems."

The TRACERS satellites launched as the primary rideshare payload aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The mission follows final system testing completed in June 2025 at Millennium's Small Satellite Factory.

"TRACERS is the result of strong collaboration between our team, NASA, the University of Iowa, and Southwest Research Institute," said Richard Prasad, TRACERS Spacecraft and MOC Project Manager. "That close partnership was key to delivering two high-quality spacecraft, and we'll continue working together through on-orbit operations to ensure the mission achieves its science objectives."

In space, the twin spacecraft will operate in tandem to study how the Sun's magnetic field interacts with Earth's magnetosphere-key dynamics that influence space weather conditions around the planet.

BAE Systems completes delivery of NOAA and NASA space weather satellites for fall launch
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Jul 25, 2025
BAE Systems has completed the delivery of two advanced satellites from its Boulder, Colorado facility to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The spacecraft-NASA's Carruthers Geocorona Observatory and NOAA's Space Weather Follow On - L1 (SWFO-L1)-are slated for joint launch this fall. Developed to enhance scientific and forecasting capabilities, both missions will operate from Lagrange Point 1, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. There, they will observe solar activity and its effe ... read more
