Sweden contracts Saab for aerial target service
Linkoping, Sweden (UPI) May 22, 2013 - Advanced aerial target services will continue to be provided to Sweden's armed forces by Saab through a new contract announced Wednesday.

Saab said the award was issued by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration and carries a value more than $45.6 million. Its period of performance runs from this year to 2020.

"We have won this new contract in the face of tough international competition, providing clear evidence of Saab´s ability to deliver high quality services," said Lars-Erik Wige, head of Saab's Support and Services business area. "Our close collaboration in this field goes back many years and the agreement is of major significance for our operations in Nykoping."

Nykoping is close to the city of Arno, Sweden, and considered part of it. Saab has conducted aerial target operations there since the 1980s.

Under the contract, Saab will continue supplying aerial target services with aircraft especially equipped for the various types of exercises required by the Swedish military. Saab will mainly be engaged in electronic warfare and target towing operations. It will also maintain aircraft used in the targeting operations.

Additional details were not provided.

The U.S. and Canada have ordered Lockheed Martin's Enhanced Laser Guided Training Rounds, which imitate the characteristics of the Paveway II weapons system.

Lockheed Martin said the two separate contracts have a combined value of $34.3 million.

The contract from the U.S. Navy for the training rounds is a follow-on award, and the second order of the training rounds against a 2013 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract. Under the follow-on, worth $21.8 million, Lockheed will also provide the Navy with logistics support for the ELGTR.

The follow-on award, Lockheed said, extends its production of the system into the year 2017.

The company's $12.5 million contract from Canada was issued by Public Works and Government Services Canada on behalf of the Royal Canadian Air Force. It is a four-year award with two one-year options.

"ELGTR ensures U.S. and allied warfighters remain trained at peak combat proficiency," said Joe Serra, precision guided systems manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "We deliver the most cost-effective and capable direct-attack training solutions with the greatest level of mission flexibility for the warfighter."

The Paveway II is a general purpose bomb but with fins and a laser seeker added for enhanced precision.
