China sends regenerative flatworms to orbit for biological research

China's space station will soon host an unusual biological subject for experimentation: the planarian, a species of flatworm distinguished by its extraordinary regenerative powers, according to a report from China Media Group.

With an evolutionary lineage dating back more than 520 million years, planarians are a staple in laboratory research. Their unique ability to completely regenerate body parts from any segment - including vital organs and even their brain - makes them an ideal model for studying tissue repair and cellular renewal.

The Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization under the Chinese Academy of Sciences highlighted that these studies could unlock critical insights into human cellular aging and longevity. By observing planarians in microgravity, scientists hope to uncover how spaceflight alters their regeneration and physiology at both the cellular and molecular levels.

The mission expands on previous biological studies aboard China's space station, which have included zebrafish and fruit flies. Zebrafish experiments have targeted the effects of microgravity on proteins related to bone and muscle development in vertebrates. Meanwhile, fruit fly studies have examined growth, movement, and circadian rhythms in a space environment characterized by low gravity and weak magnetic fields.

As researchers prepare for this next round of experiments, the planarian's inclusion marks another step forward in China's ongoing exploration of space-based biological sciences.
