Albedo Secures $12M STRATFI Contract to Advance VLEO Data for U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory

Albedo, poised to become the first commercial entity operating in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), has been awarded a Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) with potential funding reaching $12 million. This initiative will enable AFRL to access Albedo's exclusive VLEO dataset, providing critical insights into how U.S. Government space assets can effectively operate in this underutilized orbital domain.

The STRATFI contract builds upon Albedo's groundbreaking efforts in VLEO, particularly following the successful deployment of its first satellite, Clarity-1, in March 2025. Clarity-1 is designed to capture 10 cm resolution visible imagery and 2-meter thermal infrared imagery-capabilities previously achievable only with airborne assets. As part of this agreement, Albedo will supply on-orbit VLEO data and conduct analyses to support the development of future space missions and payloads beyond its optical imaging systems.

This collaboration represents a major milestone in leveraging commercial innovation to enhance national space infrastructure. VLEO presents numerous strategic benefits, including superior imaging resolution, reduced power consumption, natural debris mitigation via atmospheric drag, and improved space domain awareness.

Under the contract, Albedo will share various operational datasets, including refined GNSS telemetry for precision orbit determination, evaluations of expected versus actual orbital maintenance performance, and data critical for estimating satellite drag and atmospheric density. Additionally, Albedo will provide AFRL with atomic oxygen sensor readings and performance metrics related to its imaging capabilities, such as image quality samples, pointing precision, and agility measurements.

A cornerstone of Albedo's VLEO success is its proprietary Precision bus-a highly stable and agile satellite platform engineered to withstand the challenges of this unique orbital environment. Unlike conventional satellite systems, Albedo's approach integrates advanced power management, high-performance guidance and control systems, and modular payload adaptability. The platform also features autonomous protective protocols for solar events, efficient electric propulsion, and cutting-edge guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) technologies.

The STRATFI initiative streamlines the funding process for emerging space technologies by leveraging both governmental and private investments. This contract further affirms the viability of Albedo's technological advancements and business model, which aims to deliver unprecedented 10 cm-resolution satellite imagery while demonstrating VLEO operational feasibility.

Albedo will commence data-sharing efforts with the U.S. Space Force immediately, with ongoing analysis and mission recommendations to follow throughout the contract duration.
