U.S. Marines in Norway learn how to drift tanks on snow

Singapore's ST Engineering reveals Unmanned Hybrid Vehicle
Changi, Singapore (UPI) Feb 19, 2016 - Singapore-based ST Engineering has revealed an unmanned vehicle that can be used for both underwater and flight operations.

The Unmanned Hybrid Vehicle, or UHV, was presented during the 2016 Singapore Airshow. Defense News reports the UHV flies on a single pusher propeller which is designed to fold when the craft descends into water.

The craft has gone through underwater testing, though the company has been unable to flight test the UHV yet due to regulations.

"We've not flown the vehicle due to restrictions [on unmanned aircraft operation] in Singapore," ST Aerospace senior vice president explained. "We're looking for a good location and hope to find one this year."

Tay went on to detail the vehicle's characteristics and capabilities, saying the 55-pound vehicle is able to stay in the air for between 20 and 25 minutes, and has a flight range of 4.3 nautical miles. The UHV can reach speeds up to 4 to 5 knots while underwater.

"Not many countries are comfortable with a 25kg [55 pounds] experimental aircraft in their airspace," Tay added.

Norwegian tank pilots taught U.S. Marines how to drift their tanks on the snow ahead of Norway's Cold Response 2016 military exercise.

The demonstration involved M1A1 Abrams tanks and Amphibious Assault Vehicles. The M1A1 Abrams weights almost 70 tons, and is considered one of the heaviest tanks in the word. Amphibious Assault Vehicles are designed for attacking shorelines from naval assault ships, and are capable of carrying over 10,000 pounds of cargo.

U.S. Marines M1A1 tank crews work with the Norwegian Telemark Battalion, which showcased their drifting capability ahead of Cold Response 2016, a biennial winter military exercise hosted by the Norwegian Armed Forces. The exercise involves roughly 15,000 military personnel from 14 nations, including the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and others.

The exercise will be held from February 19 to March 22.

U.S. Army seeking to improve Medium Tactical Vehicles
Silver Springs, Nev. (UPI) Feb 17, 2016 - The U.S. Army is moving to update its current Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles after sharing information with industry partners.

The current Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles entered production in 1991 as the Army replaced five-ton trucks with designs dating back to World War II with 2.5-ton trucks focusing on common chassis and components. The U.S. Army and its contractors have produced and updated over 75,000 FMTVs over the past 25 years.

"FMTVs are clearly the backbone of what Army transporters do today, and they are found in almost all Army formations," U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command transportation deputy capabilities manager Don Overton said.

The Army began fielding the A1P2 FMTV in 2008, but Army officials say it's time to transition to the A2.

"As our world is continuing to change, Soldiers' challenges and needs are changing too," Medium Tactical Vehicles product manager Lt. Col. Frank Bridges said.

The Army will likely continue planned improvements with FMTV suspension, protection, power and other capabilities, and anticipates releasing a Request for Proposal in late Fiscal 2016 and awarding a contract in Fiscal 2017.
