Orbital ATK producing more bomb fuze sensors for USAF

Orbital ATK Inc. has received a fourth full-rate production contract from the U.S. Air Force for its DSU-33D/B proximity sensor for bomb fuzes.

The sensor provides a fire pulse to the bomb fuze and enables precise detonation for maximum effect of the weapon.

"We have provided DSU-33 sensors to the U.S. Armed Forces since 1999. Additional production of this version is testament to their quality and dependability," said Cary Ralston, vice president and general manager of the Missile Products division of Orbital ATK's Defense Systems Group. "Accuracy and dependability on the battlefield are vital and our employees give their all to meet the expectations of the warfighter."

The DSU-33D/B is an active, radio-frequency, ranging radar that senses the height of the weapon above the target and is used with FMU-139 and FMU-152 bomb fuzes. More than 154,000 DSU-33 sensors have been delivered to the U.S. military and allied nations over the years.

The new order is worth about $27 million and is a follow-on order to a 2013 full-rate production contract. The sensors will be produced at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia, a Navy-owned and Orbital ATK managed facility.

The number of sensors to be produced and the contract's delivery schedule were not disclosed.
