In this position, Volkert will have executive responsibility for all division business areas and programs. He will serve as a member of the sector leadership and executive councils and will be located at the division headquarters in Woodland Hills. Volkert will also be responsible for the Electronic Systems sector's subsidiaries and sites located in Freiberg, Germany; Pomezia, Italy; Canton, Mass.; and Salt Lake City.

Volkert has more than 35 years of experience in the defense and space industries. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman in August of this year, Volkert worked for The Boeing Company, where he most recently served as vice president of the battle management/command, control and communications (BMC3) and strategic systems business segment, with responsibility for directing the segment's international and domestic activities in the BMC3, intercontinental ballistic missile, network communications, and precision naval-navigation electronics and navigation systems markets.

In prior positions, he served as the vice president and deputy program manager for the Boeing National Missile Defense program, program director of the AC-130U Gunship, and numerous other leadership positions for significant national programs. Throughout his career he has specialized in the management of numerous complex integration programs.

Volkert earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from, and completed post-graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The Navigation Systems Division supplies situational awareness products for international and domestic defense and commercial markets and offers integrated avionics, navigation and positioning systems for space and high-value platform products.

It also supplies navigation-grade and tactical-grade inertial systems; fiber-optic gyro systems designed to customer requirements; underwater fiber-optic sensors; identification friend-or-foe transponders and interrogators; cockpit displays and computers; and logistic-support products and services.

The Navigation Systems Division is part of the company's Baltimore, Md.-based Electronic Systems sector.
