Hurricane Andres a Category Four storm far off Mexico's Pacific coast: forecasters

Andres, the first hurricane of the season in the Pacific, strengthened to a category four storm Monday but was headed away from Mexico's west coast.

Mexico's National Meteorological Service said the hurricane was packing winds of 230 kilometers (143 miles) an hour as it churned across open ocean 1,010 kilometers southwest of Isla Socorro near Cabo San Lucas, a resort city in Baja California.

Mexican weather authorities warned of the possibility of "intense to very strong" rains in the western states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit.
