GD to provide deployable instrument landing system for USAF by Ryan Maass Fairfax, Va. (UPI) Nov 12, 2015 General Dynamics Mission Systems will provide communication support the U.S. Air Force's Deployable Instrument Landing System. The U.S. Air Force ordered the landing system from Thales Group in August, contracting the production of two units in addition to technical documentation, training development, system analysis, and other services. The system aids pilots by giving them precision guidance to more accurately land at locations where air traffic control is unavailable due to infrastructure or other obstacles. "The General Dynamics Mission Systems radios offer an integrated solution with commercial off-the-shelf products, delivering significant cost savings in bringing this new Air Force capability into service," vice president of General Dynamics Mission Systems Mike DiBiase said in a statement. The Deployable Instrument Landing System provides landing instructions as pilots make their final approach, ideal for landing in low-visibility or low-ceiling weather conditions. The system is designed to be set up quickly, and can be relocated during tactical operations. General Dynamics will be supplying the radios for the system, which include the first FAA-approved ground-to-air communications with UHF and VHF capabilities. The company's Fortress wireless technology is currently used in military operations to allow vehicle operators and troops deployed in large outdoor areas to make network connections.
