A Green Collar Workforce For Both The Environment And Economy
by Staff Writers

Despite the economic headwinds, clean tech companies are blossoming and with Barack Obama's New Energy for America Plan, alongside similar state and city plans such as the City of San Jose's Green Vision Program, it's safe to assume that clean tech might be the light in the dark economic times.

Consider a few of Obama's goals, which I'm sure you're familiar with, that are both destined to both improve the environment and boost business.

+ Put 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on the road by 2015

+ Require 10 percent of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2012

+ Invest in a clean energy economy and help create 5 million new green jobs

+ Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050

Coincidently, California is home to the most clean tech jobs in the country and cities such as San Jose are leading the way with programs such as the Green Vision. The City of San Jose developed a plan with 10 green goals over a 15 year stretch that began in October of 2007. Consider some of those goals:

+ Create 25,00 Clean Tech jobs as the World Center of Clean Tech Innovation

+ Reduce per capita energy use by 50 percent

+ Receive 100 percent of the city's electrical power from clean renewable sources

+ Ensure that 100% of public fleet vehicles run on alternative fuels

We're already pretty familiar with Obama's plan, but we're not too familiar with what states and major cities are doing to not only better the planet, but to create jobs and a build a green collar workforce. I encourage you to hear more about what San Jose doing.

In just over a year San Jose created about 1,500 clean tech jobs, which includes being home to over 40 solar tech companies, became home to the largest solar testing and certification facility known as Underwriters Laboratories, had 13 percent of electricity consumed by its residents coming from clean renewable sources, reduced greenhouse gas emissions from City facilities by 20.1 percent and was named as Solar American City by the Department of Energy, amongst many other accomplishments.
