Endeavour Blasts Into Orbit In Procedure Perfect Launch
Cape Canaveral, Florida (AFP) Nov 14, 2008
The space shuttle Endeavour blasted off late Friday carrying seven American astronauts on a "home improvement" mission that will expand living quarters on the Space Station. Endeavour, packing the power equivalent to a small nuclear bomb, lit up the night sky as it twisted up and away from the Kennedy Space Center launchpad at 7:55 pm Friday. Night launches are rare but spectacular, and the nearly full moon hovering in the sky made for a breathtaking backdrop near Cape Canaveral, Florida. ... read more

Indian Probe Impacts Moon
Bangalore, India (AFP) Nov 14, 2008
An Indian probe landed on the moon on Friday, the Indian Space Research Organisation announced, in a milestone for the country's 45-year-old space programme. The probe touched down on the moon at 8:34pm (1504 GMT), 25 minutes after it was ejected from an unmanned spacecraft orbiting the moon, spokesman S. Satish said. "During its descent from Chandrayaan-1 an onboard video camera transmi ... more

Space Fantasy 2009
Gerroa NSW (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
Are we heading into 1999 or 2009. Either way it's time for another space fantasy - this time from The Planetary Society who are advising the incoming US Administration that the Moon is the wrong destination goal and that Mars is actually the correct destination. Problem is, NASA has Buckley's chance of reaching the moon anytime in the next decade let alone Mars in the next 25 years. ... more

Hubble Snaps Exoplanet Orbiting Nearby Star
Berkeley CA (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
After eight years and repeated photographs of a nearby star in hopes of finding planets, University of California, Berkeley, astronomer Paul Kalas finally has his prize: the first visible-light snapshot of a planet outside our solar system. Only 25 light years from Earth, the planet - probably close to the mass of Jupiter - orbits the star Fomalhaut at a distance about four times that ... more

Planetary Society Steps Beyond Moon For Roadmap To Space
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
The Planetary Society outlined Thursday a vigorous new approach to space exploration for the consideration of the new U.S. Administration and Congress. "Beyond the Moon: A New Roadmap for Human Space Exploration in the 21st Century" calls for the United States to create - in cooperation with international partners - a space program that is as inspiring as it is sustainable in the world's current ... more

Space Researchers Developing Tool To Help Disoriented Pilots
Houston TX (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
Not knowing which way is up can have deadly consequences for pilots. This confusion of the senses, called spatial disorientation, is responsible for up to 10 percent of general aviation accidents in the United States, with 90 percent of these being fatal, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Although there have been no spatial disorientation accidents in space, it is a major ... more

NASA Tests Lunar Rovers And Oxygen Production Technology
Hilo HI (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
NASA has concluded nearly two weeks of testing equipment and lunar rover concepts on Hawaii's volcanic soil. The agency's In Situ Resource Utilization Project, which studies ways astronauts can use resources found at landing sites, demonstrated how people might prospect for resources on the moon and make their own oxygen from lunar rocks and soil. The tests helped NASA gain valuable ... more

    Measuring Water From Space
Paris, France (SPX) Nov 14, 2008
Observations from satellites now allow scientists to monitor changes to water levels in the sea, in rivers and lakes, in ice sheets and even under the ground. As the climate changes, this information will be crucial for monitoring its effects and predicting future impacts in different regions. Sea level rise in one of the major consequences of global warming, but it is much more difficult ... more
