Air Force Converges On Vandenberg For Ops Conference

"Team Vandenberg plays a vital role in our nation's defense and the conference participants will get a real hands on orientation to space operations. I am confident they will come away with a much better understanding of our capabilities and quality people."
Vandenberg AFB - Oct 25, 2002
For the first time in two years, nearly 35 Air Force directors of operations and other senior leaders from major commands around the world and the Pentagon converged here Oct. 22 - 25 to discuss operational issues and develop initiatives to enhance the Air Force's power projection capabilities. This is the first time Air Force Space Command has hosted this conference. Last year's conference was canceled following Sept. 11.

During the 3-day conference, discussions focus on a wide range of topics from personnel management and training to Homeland security. A special emphasis will be placed on space capabilities and the High Frontier's critical role in current operations.

"We're excited the Air Force selected Vandenberg to host this important conference. What better place to showcase space operations than the birthplace of America's critical space and missile programs," said Col. Robert M. Worley II, 30th Space Wing Commander.

"Team Vandenberg plays a vital role in our nation's defense and the conference participants will get a real hands on orientation to space operations. I am confident they will come away with a much better understanding of our capabilities and quality people."

"Getting our senior operations personnel together is critical to the Air Force's future," said Maj. Gen. Randall Schmidt, Air Force Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations.

"The world is a very different place from a year ago. We owe it to the American public to get together and develop better and more effective programs and procedures that save both lives and money. Coming to Vandenberg highlights the growing importance of space in global expeditionary operations. I see this as a great opportunity for these senior Air Force leaders to discuss, observe, and experience space operations."
