Russia To Keep Kazakh Site Until 2050

Russia pays $115 million a year for launch facilities in Kazakhstan.

Russia's parliament Wednesday ratified an agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan on further use of the Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan to 2050.

RIA Novosti reports the agreement envisages development and construction of the environmentally friendly space missile complex Baiterek at Baikonur, based on Russia's Angara complex. Kazakhstan will cover the costs for the ground-based space infrastructure facilities.

Russia pays $115 million a year for launch facilities in Kazakhstan.

Baikonur remains the key link in the space programs for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States - the former Soviet republics, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said as he presented the agreement to the parliamentarians.

NASA successfully launched a new environmental satellite today for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It will improve weather forecasting and monitor environmental events around the world.
