Singapore has acceded to the Kyoto Protocol which commits signatory countries to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, the environment ministry said Thursday.

The city-state submitted its agreement to adhere to the protocol to the UN secretary general in New York on April 12, and the protocol will be effective for Singapore 90 days later, the ministry said in a statement.

Countries that ratify the Kyoto Protocol commit to reducing their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases in a bid to slash pollution and address climate change concerns.
