The G8 group of industrial nations will discuss specific climate issues for the first time next March at a top-level meeting organized by Britain during its presidency of the group, the department for the environment said Thursday.

It said environment and development ministers from the eight nations would discuss the impact of climate change in Africa and seek to draw up measures to help developing nations combat illegal deforestation.

Prime Minster Tony Blair has said he intends to put the problems of Africa foremost during the six months that Britain holds the presidency of the G8, which also encompasses Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.

In February 2004, Blair established a "Commission for Africa" as the centerpiece of his aim to make development in Africa a key objective in 2005.

The place and date of the environment meeting were not stated.
