Sony expects double-digit growth in Taiwan procurement
TAIPEI (AFP) Apr 07, 2004
Sony Corp. said Wednesday it expects its procurement from Taiwan in the year to March 2005 to register double-digit year-on-year growth to be worth about 150 billion Taiwan dollars (4.55 billion .

Sony president and group chief operating officer Kunitake Ando said his company would continue to draw on existing partnerships with other panel suppliers in Japan and Taiwan, such as Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp.

He said Sony's flat panel joint venture with Samsung Electronics can only meet about a third of its own demand.

Speaking about Sony's ongoing 'Transformation 60' structural reform bid, Ando said his company is striving to create new business domains by challenging the broadband frontier, ahead of its 60th anniversary celebrations in 2006.

"Convergence will be the key... of audio/video, information technology and telecommunications products... of hardware and software."

Sony is well-positioned to do all this, as it is one of the few companies in the world with solid exposure to all the pertinent fields, Ando said.
